little info before i tell you my problem fully rebuild front suspension about 10000 miles on it in a year and a half. (all new bushings, shocks, steering components, springs which are 67-73 mustang 550lbs 1in lowering springs, and upper and lower a-arms) now here is my problem. my maverick has been going through paint ( this is why Ive been away for a while from the forum) and shes getting put back together now and finally trying to get the suspension lowered to where i would like it. the springs all the way around are settled. i put 2in lowering blocks in the rear and left me with an 1in gap between the quarter panel lip and the tire. and the front i cut 1-1/2 coils out of them already but with lowering the rear it made her nose high. with about 2in between the fender lip and the wheel just looking to lower an inch. so i took the suspension apart and cut 1/4 coil off to see where this lowered the car. well it didnt lower it enough im thinking another 1/4 coil will be just right. now this is my problem . i jacked the car back up and the coils are barely staying in the cups and perches. if i cut any more out when i jack the car back up the springs will just fall out with the suspension drops out. why is this??? or how can i fix this i have read and seen these same springs with 2 coils cut out and never have a problem. also (if this has anything to do with it) i have to jack my car up about 8-10 in to even get the tires off the ground. i never thought about it being wrong and my alignment guy has moved away so cant bounce off of him to help me out i know this is a long post but im trying to put as much info as i can at one time.
You cut enough off the coils that now...When you jack the car up, the suspension droops more than the springs will relax. Not uncommon when you start cutting coils off to lower the car. You dont have a suspension problem you have shortened the spring causing this problem...Which only occurrs when you jack the car up.
What Mustang were the springs for? I have small block Mustang 1" lowering springs, and I cut half a coil off them. 2" lowering blocks are a little big for a Maverick.
They were for a small block mustang and one in lower I have 4 leave rear spring and they were sky high 2 in blocks still left me with an inch of space by nose is just as high with a 1-3/4 coil cut out and yes I have pics having problems loading them
I've been looking around some more and most mavericks that are lowered have a height of 24in to the fender lip. I am sitting at 25 1/2 in from ground the fender lip. Does my suspension drop out to much?
Bump... Still looking for solutions??? Do I just need to get new springs which ones should I get?? I'd like to keeps these springs like how they handle? Is there a way to limit how much they relax when I jack up the front end?????
Well...You could install travel limiting cables on your upper control arms (They need to be strategically mounted to the towers somehow) But, let me ask you this...Are the springs loose in their mounts with the car on the ground??? If so, yeah...You need to replace the springs. If not...See above statement.
They are tight when the car is on the ground jut when in the air are they loose. Can I buy limited cables from summit as like a kit?
That's what I'm thinking.. The problem seems to me that you bought a particular set that although you know what the rateing is, I wouldn't know what it became once it was cut. Obviously it became lower but was it the rateing or the height of the spring that was more or less the cause.. lol With research I'm sure you can find rateings as I did when I bought mine. I just don't remember seeing any info on height (of the springs). All of this spring cutting and lowering of vehicles has always seemed like trial and error..
