Well Im about to put my 86 302 roller together with my AFR 185s and heard about checking the pushrod length. How? I have seen push rod length checkers for chevy's but not Ford. My combo is as above with , Ford Racing x-303 cam, push rods, roller lifters, and aluminum roller rocker. All FR. THe instructions that came with my heads say get a lunati pushrod checker but the lunati one says chevy.
What gives, do you not need to check this with ford, is the blue oval infallable, I would like to hope so but putt too much money into this stuff. to trust that. Maybe I will just call Ohio George and ask him to finish the assembly for me. He did the short block.

Any help from you master engine builders would be great, thanks.

    Aloha

    Roller

It is a roller motor with regular style roller lifters.

I just slapped mine together with the stock pushrods, and found that there was slop in the exhaust, and measured how much slop was there.

I ended up buying a set of lash caps to fill in the blanks.

Not sure if that will work for you, but this $16 fix DID work for me.

My exhaust lobes had a smaller base-radius (or something along those lines).

    what's wrong with 86 pistons?

I ask because mine was rebuilt with flat-top pistons with 4 valve reliefs. I hope it doesn't crash my motor....

factory '86 pistons are completely flat with no reliefs..... could cause damage with those heads

thats what i was geting at. the cam being used is big. the heads have biger valves. im pretty sure that the stock 86 pistons wont clear the valves.

    Hmmm...good question.

The guy putting the engine together should be checking this kind of stuff out.

I mean, who slaps heads on a block and starts the engine up without first rolling it over by hand ,measuring the clearances?

    no no no fellas

I didnt spend 1500 dollars on a set of shiny heads to trash em up. I have speed pro forged pistons with butterfly reliefs. I am gonna check em with clay anyways because the AFRs valves have a slight twist to them and my valve reliefs are pretty much straight across. My bottom end however is stock reconditioned. the pushrods arent the factory pieces they are a ford racing specific part. now I don't know if that makes them any different, but i will be finding out this weekend if its all going to work.

right now i have to get back to my engine bay clean up, i found a rust hole under my battery and well i think the battery is gonna have to go in the trunk.

    thanks for all the help.

I have Speed Pro forged pistons in mine and had to enlarge, radially, the valve reliefs to clear the 2.02/1.6 valves. Cam duration will have a big affect on your clearance.
