This may have been covered before but has anybody ever used a quadrajet on their maverick. I was thinkin on it. wouldn't be that hard to adapt it to the intake. Just a thought....
I think i have seen the adapters that go from a Quarajet to a square bore in the auto parts stores. Alot of people really love those carbs. Huge secondaries with tiny primaries. Bet you can tell when those secondaries open up. lol You'd bought have to use an adapter to raise the carb up enough for the secondaries to have room to open. clint
Back when my uncle used to drive the '69 F100 I have daily, he ran some sort of 1V Chevy carb on the FE 360. He got about 17-19 mpg which is insane for any FE family engine, much less in a '69 F100. He drove the truck back and forth from NC to Atlanta 5 days a week for 3 years with that carb on there. The truck threw a rod and he gave it to me for parts for my '71 F250. I still have the carb which is mounted on a aluminum Mr. Gasket adapter. Bolts onto any standard 2V Ford intake Been thinking about rebuilding it and running it on the Maverick when I drop a 302 in. If there was ever anything good Chevy made, it was carbs.
I know a chevy guy and he swears by those Quadrajunks uhm Jets. He says he can get better perfomance and economy with one over any other carb, factory or aftermarket. I think I have a couple out in the parts shed, maybe I need to try one and see if it helps my mileage on the F100. clint
Fair warning... Quadrafloods are like Holleys in that they require tuning or they run like junk. It's real easy to get frustrated with them if you don't know what you are doing. IMO they are 2nd only to Holleys when it comes to performance. As far as economy goes, let's just say they are awesome on the front 2 barrels, but it takes a lot of will-power to keep out of the secondarys. They are not true vacuum secondary carbs. You can adjust the regulator flaps on top to delay opening, but they are more or less mechanical. Too bad no one makes a true dual plane that is spreadbore for SBFs. Offy makes a "split single plane" called the 360 that is available in spreadbore. I think I am just going to stick with a very small Holley vacuum secondary. Then again, I only have a stock 302 right now. I am going to run a 570 vac. That way the primary barrels are still tiny, smaller than the stock 2v. Then I can set the secondarys conservative. I had thought about running the 390 vac on the 302. It is only slightly larger than the stock 2v, but breaks up the flow almost in half for economy. If memory serves, Quadrabogs come in 3 flavors: 650 725 850 The primarys run about 200 cfm... Dave
Ran a Q-jet on mine back in the 70s. Great carb once you get it tuned, although if things get real hot under the hood the fuel percolates out of them 'cause the fuel bowl is right in the middle of the carb.
Ok I put the Q jet on last weekend..as of tonight my gas milage has improved from 16 mpg to almost 20 mpg... the car runs out well. I can say when I do get into it now the Q jet puts a smile on my face...you can sure tell when those big back barrels open, it sounds great.... I never was a fan of general motors products, but I like it....Jim
If you can feel the secondarys open, then they are opening too soon. The transition should be seamless for best performance. Dave
Hey oldfords, how did you know about my boat? stupid chevy engine! wish i could cheaply put a 351W in it!
