Hey guys, I've been itching to build a ram-air intake (air cleaner) for about a year and a half now. There wasn't enough clearance in my Chevelle, but theres plenty in the Mav... funny how that is:rolleyes:

Here's my plans so far... the pictures aren't curvacious as will be the final product... it's just a rough schematic on the working parts... tell me what you guys think and how to improve upon it!

    1. Lid
    2. stub-stack (mounts over carb stud) (improves air flow direction into carb= fraction of a hp?) :)
    3. K&N round filter
    4. Outer body of air cleaner, welded to #5
    5. Bottom plate, mounts to carb
    6. Runners from the air cleaner to right behind the grille
    7. Radiator
    8. holes in front radiator support that will have to be cut
    to make room for #6

To address to whole "BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN IT RAINS??"
thing, I've come up with a dandy little invention.

Make a inner "sleeve" almost identical to the middle of the air cleaner

    1. Air cleaner
    2. Sleeve
    3. Cable inkage

So, with a pull of a cable, in theory, the plates would de-align,
blocking the ram-air passages and opening the rear rectangular
air port in the back. Hell, the rear port is better than what came
stock anyway, and I'm not worried about performance when it's raining, soo...

That's all I could figure. Brackets will have to be fabricated for the pull cable, and also a slot on the air cleaner to allow for the connection between the cable and the sleeve... other than that, I see no hitch in the plan... whattaya think?

It's very similar to something that already exists - except for the switcherooney thingamajig. You might look for it as your foundation.

Good luck with it if you decide to build it.

    edit:Found it.

those ram air boxes wernt too cheap last time i looked, youd probably be better off making your own. i just finished a model of a '64 fairlane thunder bolt and it had a factory setup like on that chevelle, olds cutlass had them as well, W32 option I believe.

Now that you mention that, GTOs had similar scoops to the Grabber...
They used a double snorkel air cleaner housing that the snorkels turned upward and met the hood off to each side at the scoops.
    That would be interesting.

poncho style would be cool, im sure that would flow enough air for a stock set up. this is a V8 car were talking about right? i know in my 250 the carb sits so high there is no room for anything but the stock air cleaner. i did put on a very small open-element aircleaner that sits up in the scoop and you can feel the diffrence even on that little I6
