does anyone know what the fiberglass part that lies horizontal just below the top of the rear bumper is called? Basically it fills the space between the tail light panel and the bumper. I know for the front its called a stone guard. Got my car all primered and the guy at the body shop pointed out the the it has hairline cracks in it that will cause the paint to crack. Wanted to know if I could get a new one someplace.
I do not think they were fiberglass, they were plastic just like new car bumper covers. I believe your body shop needs to add something to the paint to make it somewhat pliable, just like they do with plastic bumper covers today. You will not be able to get a new one, it will have to be used. I have heard them called bumper fillers before.
I've heard them referred to as ' Splash Guards ' AND the Stone Guards .. They're metal and if you find one that's a little bruised ... Keep it and work it out .. They're very difficult to locate. Mavericks not too bad .. Comets ...NIGHTMARE .. Had to locate one for my Comet when some Dipstick backed into me in a Gas Station some years ago .. Took MONTHS to locate one .. then I had to ' redo' it . Cometized (Chip)
I always called it a stone guard, or bumper filler panel. It's a urethane plastic. You won't need it when you convert to small bumpers.
