I haven't looked closely at the floorboard in the Maverick, but I would guess we could do this same type construction of sub frames as this guy. These particular photos are for a 1968-74 Nova, however, the idea of recessing them above floorboard level is intriguing. This way, they don't hang so low. I don't know if there are any stiffness strengths or draw-backs. Whatcha think?
That is how Todd's Mav is done, only it also ties in the rear backhalf crossmember of the Pulley four link assy. to the front subframe. Maybe would work just for connecters but you may have to install some sort of rear crossmember too. Just a guess on that.
Good call, Dave. I saw one of these bieng installed on Horsepower TV and it WAS a being put on a back-halfed car.
think of it this way. When they go through the floor, you are able to weld the floor metal to the the subframe connector, which strengthens the entire floor/chassis assembly. The floor is an important part of a unibody car, actually the floor and rocker boxes are THE frame, more or less. You can really tell a HUGE difference when they go through the floor and are welded properly. That being said, one of these days I'm gonna get around to building a set for my little Mustang. Maybe I can trim the top of them down to where they don't protrude into the passenger compartment area so much. Another project for another day.
Heres mine, probably not what you are talking about Rick, but it might be another ideal to THUNK about.
I just did mine about two weeks ago, 2" square tube welded and doubled to the stock front tubes and angled back to the torque boxes in a straight line. Kinda mixed what Robert and Cleavor did. I did make some of it stick out the bottom so it wouldn't jack up the carpet to much, that also gave me a better area to weld to the torque box.
