I have been changing my oil every six months, because I don't drive the maverick much.

Well, it has been six months, but the oil is still CRYSTAL clear, and maybe has 10 miles on it since I changed it. It has been way too hot to drive it so I drove it only once around the neighborhood in July and again last week.

I am thinking to not change the oil until the next six-month mark in May.

Using Motorcraft synthetic blend with a quart of lucas, so each oil change is a bit expensive.

So, what do the masses think? Change it or let it go another six months?

I'd say, there is no reason to change it, if it's just sitting there, it's been in the ground for a lot longer....If you don't start your car from time to time, it's not getting dirty. I didn't even change mine this summer, it's still nice and clean from last year, but I will in the spring, I drove my car more this year more than ever.

I change oil once a year. I drove it 5K mi. since I've had it "July 09". I probably did 2500-3000Kmi this year. I don't use any additives until I put in Stabil for the winter, "this coming week".
IMO - changing oil any more than that, is a waste of money - unless ur car is used in some kind of extreme conditions..

I agree there's no need to change it yet.

In my older SUV...I do add a little duralube to the oil...it has never failed me. I tried it years ago for the first time in an old car I had...if you rub a little bit of oil between your fingers...and then compare how slick it feels with a little duralube mixed with the oil...big difference...I figured it had to feel the same to the engine. One time an oil changing place had forgot to tighten the oil plug, and I had drove it for 1/2 hour with no oil...the engine was super hot...but did not lock up..and came back to life just fine.

Of course..no need for additives in any engine....especially in low mileage ones.

My opinion (you did ask): Total waste of money. I have some cars I haven't changed the oil in YEARS.....because I seldom drive them. But...I do drive them more than 10 miles a year. :D

Like ESampson said, it's just like sitting on the shelf. I change mine once a year, in the spring. I figure that since I have to add a quart or two between changes, it's getting some replaced anyway. Mine is driven maybe 150 or 200 miles a month from April through Oct, and maybe 75 miles a month from Oct to March. My old engine is getting tired, and will probably be replaced sometime next year. Waiting on some info on a 95 roller block a friend told me about before I make any definite decisions.....

I change the oil at 6 months in the maverick and the wife's daily drive 05 mustang just because they get some driving, but nowhere near 3000-5000 miles. And over time, the oil will pick up water vapor and become acidic.

The mustang will get an oil change, but the maverick, with only 20 or so miles...That is why I asked.

On my daily drive truck...I rack up 4000 miles in a month or two, so it gets changed every 4k. Almost due...

Depends on your climate. Around here with temp changes condensation builds up in the crankcase. Not driving a car is worse than driving it up here. Explain this to my customers often. Alot of seniors dont do the mileage but I still push the oil change. Usually tell them to extend the 3 month to 4. My Mav gets done after it comes out in the Spring and again before it goes away. Pretty standard to keep moisture out of the oil which is likely minimal in my car anyhow. It gets good runs down the hwy to get the engine nice and hot even in the cool weather. Also depends on your PCV system.
I dont bother with synthetics in the old 5.0 It gets a good quality bottled oil. Even if I ran synthetic and could drive it all year I would go 6 months for syn. even with low mileage.
I do like Synthetic in our vehicles come Winter time. Saves wear and fuel and cranks over much easier in the freezing temps.
Moisture is the killer Scoop. Not time or mileage. I service Crossfires(mercedes) that go 15000km plus before the oil reminder comes on. Mobil 1 can take the mileage.

I assume your climate is very hot and dry. Not like your getting much moisture in the crank case is it. Your not doing short trips or running it and shutting it off right?
