Can anybody tell me if the gear that connects to the speedometer cable gear is made of plastic or metal. Our speedometer cable gear itself was made of plastic and it was chewed up and I am hopeing that the gear it connects to is metal so I don't have to replace it too.

If it's a C4, then yes, it's part of the tailshaft and is therefore metal. If it's a manual, I know the gear is pressed on to the tailshaft, but I'm not sure if it's nylon or metal.

Like Matt said, it depends on the transmission. As far as the pressed on ones on the tailshaft, I've not seen many that were chewed up. The driven gear (speedo cable) usually gets the worst ware, as it has less surface area then the drive gear and it is under more stress. You should be able to look in the gear hole with a bright light and inspect it. Might need a mirror too if you can't get a good line on it.
You probably want to see why it was chewed up in the first place. Check out the cable for free movement. It might be pinched someplace.
