Hello to all!I'm thinking of swapping out my c4 automatic for a t5 standard transmission onto my 250 cid.I know 250 and 302 share the same bellhousing but what i wanted to know is if there is other parts i might need to modify or change like the transmission mount and the drive shaft.Any cutting or any other parts i might need?i currently have a 5 lug drum differential and 5 lug disc brakes from a 73 comet.the only mod i made to my mav. Any info will be very helpful thankx everyone
The 70 has a smaller transmission tunnel than later years. I had to split open the top of the tunnel and add some metal to clear the T5's shift rod tube. The T5's crossmember mounting pad is about 1 1/2" farther rearward than earlier trannys so some fabrication is needed there. You need to decide what type of clutch linkage you want. In mine I used an adaptor plate to mount the trans to the bellhousing and used early Mustang clutch linkage. You need a clutch/brake pedal assembly.
So how about for a 4 speed transmission ? which year and what modifications or fabrication should me made?
IIRC, the 250 and 302 use the same bellhousing? If so, the 4-speed doesn't need an adaptor and the T5 could use this: http://www.cjponyparts.com/cpc-t-5-adapter-plate-for-6-bolt-bellhousings-1965-1973/p/T5AP/
.. Im running a t5 behind a 302 in my 70...didnt make any changes to the tunnel..used a crossmember i got from the previous owner who also ran a t5...it looks like one a member of this.site.builds....im.using a hydraulic setup...almost identical to the one in the t5 swap tech article on this site...my pedals are.from a later maverick i think.....driveshaft fits great.too....just my two cents worth
okay well how about if i want to install a standard 4-speed transmission ?what year fits best and what mods should be made? I'm not doing this for racing performance i just need a standard transmission .3 speed auto is killing me on the freeway lol
look in tech section Check out the article on stickshift swap in the druvetrain section...gives basic info on ford stickshifts and what may be needed for the swap
Hmmm I wonder what I've got going on? Wait, you've got a T5Z, what's the difference between that and a T5?
Sounds like your trans has (at least) a Camaro tailshaft. They were rotated 15° CCW,looking from the rear, to offset the bellhousing's rotation.
T5Z is rated at 330 lb ft torque. The case and tail housing are standard Ford T5. I think Russ is right, the Camaros rotated the trans for better shifter handle location, IIRC.
