Well gentlemen, The day I have waited for has fianlly arrived. Ive been wating for my 88 t-bird to take a dive so I can have an excuse to put the engine in my 69.5 maverick,,, (all it took was for the heater core to blow out,, got my wifes feet covered in antifreeze) Dont worry, she is fine, was not hot,,, had to get her a new pair of shoes though,,,, But it was enough to say, thats enough, park it! Anyways, ive been searching threads on this site, looking for the answer to a question that has been asked a million times,,,, FLYWHEELS and the C4 tranny. The engine is a 88 roller 5.0. the tranny is out of a 83 T-bird C-4 auto,,,, Ive read about tooth counts, balances, 28 and 50 oz's,,, Will my 88 roller bolt right up to the 83 C4 tranny, and have no problems with balance, or bolt pattern in the torque converter??? My t -bird has the AOD,,, I sure do want to keep the flywheel, and the starter matched up,,, Im hoping the 83 tranny would be new enough to have the changes,, (if there is any) So,,, what is the deal? Can I use the 88 flywheel with the 83 C4???? Or do I have to buy a special flywheel? The engine is still in the t-bird,, but would not take long to pull it out,,, Darned good running engine!!! Dont wanna mess it all up! Thank you!! ChadS

Most likely you have all the parts. 83 likely has a 164 tooth bell and a big bolt pattern C4 converter (11 and something circle). YOu will probably have to use your AOD flexplate (which should be a 50 oz plate) and starter. 50 oz Flexplate should have a big slug about 3" long 1" wide and about 1/4 thick on it. The 83 flexplate is likely a 28 oz plate.

    Also - technically an 83 model is a C5.

Thanks Cleaver! After looking at the photos, I have a small bellhousing C4, case filler tube, I found a 157tooth, 50oz flexplate for 50 bucks! I think that is a deal and a half! Do i have to run the older Ford starter with the 157 tooth flywheel? Also, what are some front pulley setups that are used with the newer engines that used a serpentine belt? I have no power steering, so all I need is an alternator,, Is this just a pulley swap, or??? My 88 roller has AC,PS,and the pollution pump. Im not going to use all that on the maverick,,, I was gonna AOD it, but that is too much hassle for me to do that,, especially with the small tranny tunnel. I found out today that my t-bird exhaust manifolds will not allow me to use a column shifter, So Im fitting the T-bird floor shifter to the maverick, Yeah its a 4 speed shifter, but I can make it a 3 speed real quick,,,, It uses a cable that will work with my C4 linkage. Can't say for sure about the starter. Maybe someone else can verify. That is why I suggested using the matched starter to the flexplate....safe way to do it. Put it this way....I have (1) starter I have used on 164 and 157 flaxplates on an engine test stand only. The starter came from a 164 bell.. It works on the 157 but it is loud. Real loud. My 157 wheel is a little tore-up so it could just be the wheel but I have suspected there could be a slight difference in gear pitch or mis-alignment. My opinion - seek out a 157 tooth starter just to be sure.
I have done the serpentine belt conversion. So have several others on this board. I had to stack some washers behind the alternator to move it forward. Belt on the test stand engine says Dayco 193.
