Hi all, I have original stock tires on my 73 Comet and they are so skinny that they actually look dumb! Need advise on what would be the best wider size tire for her Thanks Lar
Same rims, or swapping rims? Generally, you can get 15X6 or 15X7 up front, with 215 or possibly 235 wide up tires. Rears go 15X8 with 245, with the occasional 275 width and the rare 15X10. It depends on your car, and your backspacing. Lots of threads about this, so do a search.
Dont know what the stock rim size is, but I have 14x7 wheels on mine, and i run 245s in the back and 215s in the front. I think it looks real good. The only problem is that only one company makes the 245/14s still and would cost about $300 for a pair mounted. Luckily I recently found an old yet never used pair I got for less than $100 and mounted em myself. If your thinking about changing rims tho i'd go to a 15, way more tire sizes and way less of a hassle when trying to get anything wider than a 215.
The stock rims are pretty skinny, so tire size is pretty limited, plus 14" tires are getting pretty hard to find in different sizes....
As I just found out, all tires are not created equal. Be sure to check the specs of the tires....especially the tread width. For instance I ordered a standard Firestone 215/70-14 and it looked tiny. The tread width was only 5". I then checked the specs and ordered Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s in the same size and they had a 7" tread. I did run into a rubbing problem with 215/70s (with 7" thread) in the frt with my wheels in the past so I went with a smaller size in the frt. If you're running stock rims, I'd recommend Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s in a 205/70-14 all the way around.
