Top loader 4 speed

    I got a 4 speed toploader i got at a swap meet for $500 with bell housing,linkage, and half the shifter all it needs is a handle... what should i look for (damage wise) i dont know much about it but i do know the mavs drive shaft fits on it perfect... i can post the casting # if needed. thank you

    cool thanks ill look up all the info on it after school looks use full ive been to the site before but never seen all the info about the casting numbers... thanks

    whats the diffrence witha 351 bell housing and a 302? the bolt patters seem to be the same

    the bolt patterns are the same the 351w came with a 164 tooth fly wheel and an 11" clutch and the 302 came with a 157 tooth fly wheel and a 10.5" clutch you can use either of them on either motor.

    what clutch/ pressure play (what inch/tooth) should i use?

    Firsth the flywheel needs to match bell housing. 157 vs. 164.

    Then your clutch kit needs to match the flywheel. 10 - 10.5 - 11 - Long or Diaphram ...

    so since i have a 351 bell. i need the 164 and whats long or diaphram?

    1966 Mustang, 1972, 73, 73 and 73 Mavericks
    Diaphragm long and Borg & Beck are three styles of pressure plates. The Long and Borg & Beck have interchangeable bolt patterns while the diaphagm has a different pattern. Some flywheels come with both patterns but most have one or the other.
    I prefer the Borg & beck and Long style because as the rpm goes up they clamp harder. The Diaphagm style used to disengage when the rpm went up - The way they are designed it is a difficult fault to overcome.
    Typically your flywheel will determin the pressure plate style - so find it first unless you buy new then you can pick and choose both at the same time.
    Don't forget that you should replace the pilot bearing.
