My 74 Maverick automatic trans is now not shifting out of first gear unless I manually do it. Is this some sort of vacum problem? If there is too much transmission fluid would this also cause the problem?
Have you recently done work on it (referring to the 'too much fluid' comment)? Have you replaced the modulator?
Check your kickdown lever to see if it is hung. My first Comet did that after being parked for awhile(first car, had to get it running to drive). The first time I floored it, from that point on it held out 1st and wouldn't hit 3rd... I thought I blew it up until I got home...
Yes it looks like the transmission fluid is a bit overfilled. My son "swears" he did not add any. At any rate I'm going to hand pump out the excess. I don't know what a "kick down" lever is. Is this an internal part in the transmission? Seems like I had this problem once before and it was a vacume line or something. I will find out tomorrow when my mobile mechanic (I should put him on retainer) come to visit my 3 Mavs.
lever from the carb to the tranny, controls downshifts at wide open throttle. If it is stuck open, it won't shift until 5000ish RPMs.
