So I tried to upgrade the carb on my 250 i6 to a 2bbl carb, and was unsuccessful. There were problems with a few things, and I needed my car running, so I put the old carb on and started her up, worked just fine, until I hit about 30 mph. It wasnt shifting into 2nd gear. It sounded like I was pushing it, so I let off. I took it to my mechanic and he said the problem was something with the vacuum. He replaced a few damaged vacuum hoses, but that didn't fix it. He thought it might have had something to do with the kickdown rod. I had disconnected the bolt that goes to the kickdown rod when I replaced the carb, but I reconnected that. He also said that the egr valve was missing, but that it was unrelated. What could be causing this problem, and is it worth it to replace the egr valve? The actual mechanic is busy for the week, so it's at my house right now, and it would be awesome if I could fix it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Would this egr valve work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tomco-10427-EGR-Valve-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQfitsZModelQ3aMaverickQQitemZ250681388864QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_3495wt_1084
there is a vac. line that goes from the carb to the transmission. it needs to be hooked up to a manifold vac source. chances are that line is disconected or pluged up. check its connection on the transmission. its located on the passenger side towards the back of the tranny.
I'm pretty sure I found the problem. There's a metal line coming from the trans that goes to a rubber adapter, a one way valve that has dist on one side and carb on the other, then to a hose that is broken off at the end. Where is that supposed to be connected?
It is to the transmission modulator. There should be a tee directly under the carb, with 3 vacuum ports on it. Connect your hose from the metal line there. The check valve should not be in that line. It should be on the hose to the vacuum advance on the distributor.
I give up. I was at that for like 2 hours, and got nowhere. I think someone tried to redo the vacuum system or something, because there's a whole lot of stuff wrong compared to the diagram that I got from 1bad6t.com. there's a lot of stuff that just isn't there, like the solenoid valve, the egr valve, and the check valve. Plus, pretty much every cable has been rerouted to work, and since I'm not the one who jury-rigged it to work, I can't figure it out. I just hope that my mechanic can.
He wont have a problem with it. He should know which hoses need which vacuum and hook them up for you.
its really simple what you need to do to get the trans to shift correctly. the metal line that comes up from the the trans needs to be connected directly to a vac port on the the intake manifold. thats all the trans will need to shift correctly.
