Hello People, I have a 1970 automatic 200 c.i. Maverick, I've had it about 4 years and it has always had a problem running smooth. Ignition has been upgraded to a MSD Blaster II coil with electronic ignition rather than points (mechanical) ignition that came with the engine (Audibly does not run at a consistent RPM). There is a ticking noise coming from what sounds like the front side of the block from the valvetrain. Recently I've taken off the valve cover to investigate more and found bits of rubber around some of the valves and mainly near the rear of the block. Has anyone else seen this before? Is there any more troubleshooting I can go through to see if the problem elsewhere? I am waiting to remove the cylinder head until I have a new gasket and head studs (If I need to.). I appreciate any help!
Valve stem seal failure, common problem on pre '80s engines. Though the first 4.6s in early '90s were notorious for failure. Causes oil burning but not noise. Need to inspect rockers & shaft for wear, also be sure shaft isn't clogged. If OK probably lifter and/cam issue. These engines have reuseable bolts, studs would be a major PITA

You need to have the head removed and co completely through the head. New seals, guides, etc. Have posi-lock valve seals installed. They look like this when installed.
