Going to be running a few passes at the track next week and was wondering what rpm to you guys shift at??? (might only get two passes it has been busy lately) I have 70 mav with 302, msd ignition. rpm performer intake, 600 holley, mild cam, duel exhaust with hooker headers, c-4 trans,3.73 gears. I have been shifting at 5000 with nice results (no official time on country roads yet) unable to get speed reading as speedo just dances around still need to replace that. should I be looking at 6000 or stick with the 5000 ????
South Jersey running ATCO... I need to look up the north jersey track you guys run at and see if I can make a night or two If you have a web address fro it send it to me.. rheyco@comcast.net
Try one at 5000, then another at 5500 and compare your times. I find that my times are worse shifting at 5500 over 5000 (on my old setup, havent run it on my newer setup, and this may change). If there is an improvement, add another couple hundred rpms. It is trial and error, and when you find the right rpm, move the little red line on your tach and leave it there.
In my opinion, it it is a stock cam, 5,000 RPM shift points is going to be about it. I used to shift my '67 Fairlane, with a 289, at 7,300 RPM, but I had a stout solid lifter cam in the engine and 4.56 gears.
Yeah. That's a good way to say it and do it. Every set-up has a peak and then a fall-off. By the time you react to shift at 500 RPM before the peak, you're probably at 200-300 before peak at actual shift.
My '91 stock 5.0 mustang ran best shifting at 4800(AOD car). With no head work and stock cam, you'd be surprised how many rpms you DON'T need to turn to get your best times.
All good points...On my stock engine, I tried 5000 rpm and found that I had better times at 4500, and even BETTER at 4000...After a little work on the engine, intake, heads, headers, it ran better at 5000. I am thinking I might be able to go more now with the other new things I have added. Just play with it and see where it WANTS to shift...
I guess I should rephrase that. I have my shift light set 500 rpm before car quits pulling, figuring that by the time all the "electric" stuff happens to make the light come on and then me reacting to it, puts me right at peak rpm's at my shift.
I understood what you was sayin also Just wanted to know first time down the strip and wanted a starting point....
Hey Vern, I`d start out at 5,000 , then try higher and lower to see what it likes best. Mine likes 6,500
