Hello, I'm installing a Crane XR-i electronic ignition conversion and need to find where the ballast resistor or resistor wire is located. The instructions say to splice one of the wires from the module into the wire leading to the ballast resistor, but I'm wondering if just any 12v keyed on source will work?
you probably don't have a ballast resister on your ford unless some one put it there, if you wire anything up you should put a fuse or circut breaker just to be safe. if you nedd 12v switch power look for something that only has one or two functions and use that.
I did the test for ballast resistance and there is ballast resistance present. I think older mustangs had a resistance wire somewhere under the dash, are Mav's similar?
Mavericks do have a resistor wire. I believe it is light green with a red stripe going to the coil. Here is a previous thread about it: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=14286
does every electronic ignition require this wire to be cut or bypassed? because i do not remember anything in my MSD system about this wire.... my car runs awesome...and i never cut out a wire.... i guess this crane setup is weird that way
The only two electronic ignitions I have delt with, Crane XR700 and XR-i, require that there be ballast resistance. I know that the Crane XR3000 requires that the ballast resistor or resistance wire be eliminated.
On the MSD the switched wire is used to turn the unit on and off. The main power is through the large red wire.
My Mallory Unilite suggested a ballast resistor. I spliced it in between the coil and distributor. Seth
