I would like to put AC into my '71 V8 Maverick Grabber. I am unsure what to do. Get a donor car and swap, or look for an aftermarket system. There is a complete vintage aftermarket system for a Maverick/Comet on e-bay for auction. Can anyone out there help me with some knowledge? Do I have to take the windsheild out to remove the dash? I do not plan to do anything soon but I would like to gather the parts and some know-how before I dive in. I tried to look in the archives but they seem unavailable. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Jason, I couldnt find the Air Conditioning kit you described on E-Bay but my 1977 Maverick has what appears to be a dealer installed Ford Maverick/Mercury Comet aftermarket air conditioning system produced by Ford Motor Company.
looks like the fella that originally purchased the car had this installed not long after taking delivery of the car when it was new as its general condition (although it DOES still work) looks to be at least as old as the car.
It consists of all the usual air conditioning components ie. Compressor, Evaporator, Condensor (with real shady looking mounting brackets securing it to the front core support), Blower housing and vents, lines, hoses and etc etc....
The Blower housing mounts under the passenger side of the dash right up against the heater housing/box, and the center dash vent opening has been cut larger to allow for mounting the vents and controls for the Air Conditioner which are all molded into the air conditioner blower housing.
The Hoses to the Air conditioner box are fed through the firewall just to the left of the floor vents from the heater box, then they run up past the right side of the engine to the compressor (mounted above the alternator on my 200cid I-6) and to the condensor).
The A/C blower motor is powered by a wire thats been tapped into a fuse that runs only with the key on and is grounded to a metal dashboard bracket.
the blower housing also has two flexible ducts that run to both the left and right dash vents and my drivers side vent duct has been cut away to allow connection from the A/C housing instead of operating with the handle mounted under the drivers side of the dash (this used to open the drivers side vent to outside air from the cowl, now it just vents to the floor).
Anyway, it looks kinda crude when you see how its installed, but seeing as how its got FORD written all over it Im guessing it HAS to be a dealer add-on from 1977.
From the way it appears,,the windshield in my Maverick DID NOT need to be romoved to perform the installation.
Like I said earlier, the system installed in my car still works fine, but after having to remove portions of it to replace my heater core I can tell you its a pain in the @ss to work around,,,OH YEAH,,,and changing a bad alternator was also a big headache as the compressors shear size makes it VERY difficult to remove the alternator from the car much less SEE the alternator...LOL
just thought Id fill ya in on what Im dealing with with my A/C stuff.

ANDE
