Maverick A/C units?

i just wanted to ask those of you who have it, just how well does it work? (when working properly) ive got a 72 V8. the A/C is all there, and not locked up, but im wondering if its worth charging up. it might not hold a charge and be extremely expensive to make work. whereas i prefer AC.. engine maintainence, accessability, and overall performance could be improved by the removal of the whole thing. also, right now i dont have that little solonoid thingy that was attached to the old 2V carb, or the heater control valve. can the AC function well/properly without these pieces? and if so... where can i get that carburetor piece? will it adapt to my aftermarket (edelbrock) carburetor? thanks MT
