if i'm going to do this won't i need to pull the whole distributer and shaft out? also,puttin in the new one should i just put the rotor in the same position?will that do?thanks

Yes, if replacing the dist. put the new one in pointing to the exact same position the old one was, assuming the engine has not been turned in either direction. Then do a final timing with a timing lite at 10 degrees before top center (BTC) with engine running and vacuum disconnected.
