Go back to the flywheel end and see if you have the same movement. If so, your thrust bearing is trash. If not, the the damper might also be twisted and just looks like it's moving back and forth. In that case your damper rubber ring is history.
Best way to find out if it's the thrust bearing. With the engine off, use a big screwdriver and ply on the flywheel toward the rear, then ply on the front damper at the center cast part forward the front a see how much movement you have. Thrust is normally about .006-.012" just enough to feel a movement.
