I recently purchased a 1970 Maverick. It is currently has no motor, but it does have a C4 tranny and has the V8 motor supports (I was told 'someone' put a 289 in it long ago).
I have an AOD that has been upgraded to suport 700 h.p. 1st through 3rd gear with a manually controlled electronic overdrive (nice for highway). I have used this in a '90 Convertible (heaviest of all stangs) and have been VERY pleased with it while running 7.2 in the 1/8 mile (1.5 60'). The enginne I am putting in it is a 347 C.I. (bored and stroked 5.0). With a 200 shot of nitrous, I intend to put out around 600 h.p. (as I wrote this I remembered again that the Maverick weighs 2500 lbs. - can't wait) I've looked at Jegs and Summit for headers that will fit the swap, however I am unclear on which type to get. I look for all the 302 styles but I see many that say "NOT FOR C6 Automatic" or "C4 ONLY", etc. I wonder, does this apply to the 1990 AOD as well? If anyone has done this swap, or knows of someone who has, I'd appreciate the help (see my up-coming EFI post - I want to stay with EFI using a F.A.S.T. ECU ("formerly SpeedPro" and "FelPro" also). Great board, Guys. I look forward to stopping by often. Rick Book Houston, TX .............. Rick, the standard long tube header should work ok. The AOD is a little larger around but should not present a problem. The issue for me if I wanted maximum performance in your intended setup would be the primary tube size of the headers. Trying to get 600 hp worth of gas out an 1-1/2" size will become a limiting factor. In the Mav engine bay, there in not enough room to use a larger tube size unless mods are made and even a custom larger tube header used. The usual solution is to go with a Mustang II front suspension and do away with the spring towers, then you are open to several solutions. ....I may have brought up issues that you were not thinking of but need to think about to get the performance I think your looking for. And I feel, you should think hard about the rear suspension and rear end. With that much power on tap, you going to break things. Think 9" rear! ...Others on the board are running AOD trans with carbs and EFI, and can tell you of there exhaust experences i'm sure. ...Old Guy can give some advice on you suspension I do believe. Good luck,Ken |
