so about 6 yrs ago when i put a 250 Transmission and its torque converter (from a 72 Mav) with my 302 into my 70 Mav, i didnt realize i needed to use dowel pins. i was learning and had no clue. long story short, the front seal in trans is now leaking like crazy. got it pulled today and discovered instead of 2 dowel pins, there was only one and its wore the neck of the TC down some and has some grooves in it. can feel them with fingernails and finger tips. I was going to replace the front seal of course, but now to be safe, i think ill also replace the pump bushing behind that seal. theres no way it isnt trashed at this point. my question is ....i still have my old 200 TC and its been sitting topped with fluid for 6yrs. is the 200TC (1970), the same as the 250 TC (1972). can i use this and be ok or is it totally different. is the stall the same? the neck on the 200 TC is smooth as new. the prices im seeing for a 72 replacement are outrageous. or is a new TC neck an option? IF i must go with a new TC what stall will match the 250? i wanna stay the same as it works fine. thanks
"Bellhousing & torque converter are totally different between 200 & 250." The 200 thru late 70's still used the original small bellhouse and block - BH bolt pattern on the block from the 'peanut' 3 spd manual and the 2 spd 'Fordomatic' of 1960 Falcon/Comet 144 cid engine. Unique to the small block six', the TC has the small 136T starter ring gear integrally welded to the TC. The 250 small block six uses the same dimensions Starter,- Bellhouse , 157T FW and TC as the Ford V8 of the era. here's a '76 Comet GT 200 cid with the small bellhouse setup and ubiquitous C4 3 spd automatic. The larger 'Toploader" manual tranny bellhouse drill pattern is visible above BH on block. . . Early 200 with 'peanut' 3 spd manual bellhouse and '71 Maverick 170 block with "Toploader" 3spd - Manual Bellhouse . . ... I never learned to drive them automatics...
