Hey everyone, happy and proud new owner of a 72 base model Comet with recently redone interior and a 3 speed on the floor. Found the head gasket was leaking oil from the rear of the gasket, so I'll be doing a full rebuild this weekend.

Anyone done this before? Any tips, tricks, or gotchas? I've rebuilt a modern fuel injected w3800 Series III engine, so I know what I'm getting into for at least everything in the teardown and up to the timing.

Welcome! You'll find it a joy to work on compared to late model cars.

I made some guide pins when doing my head gasket. Got 2 bolts from the hardware store, that are the same thread as the head bolts. 7/16x14. But 5 inches long. Cut the head off and sharpen the end. Put one on each end of the block. Drop the gasket on, then the head. Keeps it straight.

One can also cut a "slot" into the end of the bolt where you cut the head off. Use a standard flat screwdriver to be able to rotate and remove the bolt.
