Other threads seem to revolve around t5 swaps, hydraulic conversions, etc. Is anyone running a stock setup clutch (zbar, clutch fork, bell housing, flywheel) that has converted to a diaphragm clutch for a 71 302? My only difference is the tranny is a 4 speed toploader which doesn’t matter. I’m simply looking for a street application and easier clutch pedal. I do need a new flywheel, so I could buy a stock one or something else if needed. I keep hearing that centerforce is a direct bolt up but all I see they offer is a dual friction type. With a 157 tooth flywheel, a 10.5 inch is the maximum? Ideally I’d just like a clutch and pressure plate that has a stock bolt pattern but would definitely buy a different flywheel to accommodate a diaphragm bolt pattern. Also, what’s the final word on removing the clutch pedal assist spring when going diaphragm? I guess try it and see? Thanks
for the small block six 137T FW that uses Toploader 3 Speeds T5 conversions, I've converted the long-frame type clutch to 10" Diaphragm Clutch used on late 70's application Ford. . Only Clutch Linkage change was it needed original type Throw-Out bearing to fit fork. I believe the 157T FW's 70's Ford application 10" 302 Diaphragm Clutch will fit most check this out: https://www.autozone.com/searchresult?searchText=clutch . . . for small block six 250 that uses same 157T as 302 V8 the Centerforce weighted diaphragm is a more affordable favorite: . also SBF V8 T5 BH's can be converted to older push linkage . . hav fun .
I can find diaphragm clutch kits as you posted from AutoZone. My fear or understanding was the diaphragm pressure plate has a different bolt pattern and I wasn’t sure it would bolt to stock flywheel
Changing out the original bushings on your Pedal Support Bracket to "roller bearings" will greatly reduce the Clutch Pedal effort too! By reducing friction, pedal effort is easier and much smoother, many members, including myself have done this conversion. Mustang Steve produces this conversion kit, see link below. Also, other members have "rollerized" their Z-bar, rod linkage to further reduce friction for much smoother operation. I think I'm going with this. It appears to be correct and claims it uses existing flywheel. https://www.npdlink.com/product/premium-clutch-set-ram/105828/202855
I've been running a Centerforce I for probably 20 years. It's time to replace it. I just got this to put in: https://www.ebay.com/itm/132939532740 Valeo is who makes Ford's pressure plates (and about 1/3 of all the clutches on the planet). They can supply the kit with a 28 oz flywheel if that's what you need.
