I also used 3/16" plate, for the same reason. I know the shock towers aren't that thick but, they did have some gusseting that I cut out.
99% sure, it's a yes. Unless, someone put a 289 in it at some point. More than likely, it is a 302 though.

The Duraspark is, in fact, a "good" factory electronic ignition system. But, it just can't produce the current that the MSD, Mallory, etc....
