What gets me is the statement "feels like it's coming from the back", and "feel it in the back of the seat"...
Usually engine vibrations and even vibrations as far back as the front u-joint are felt more in the steering wheel and pulsate through the dash.
When you feel it in the seat back or bottom, it is usually the back of the driveshaft, rear joint, pinion bearing, or out of balance/defective rear tire.

You may have more than one thing going.

Edit: In my experience (unfortunately I have broken MANY rear ends) a pinion bearing will be very selective about when it vibrates. A bad pinion bearing will usually only vibrate when the engine is in gear and applying at least some pressure against the pinion. Just a thought.

Edit2: When the cars are in good repair, Mavericks can be very smooth. The short wheelbase, unibody construction, and antiquated suspension can make them rough riding on bad roads, compared to a modern car, but that is not what I would consider "Mavericks always vibrate".

Had this exact same problem, check the trans mount out, chances are you will need one especially if the one thats in it has had any trans fluid on it. (which really eats away at the rubber)

Could be output shaft bushings/bearings in the trans.Something pounded out the seal?? They dont just wear out, something makes them wear out.If the output shaft is loose in its bearings/bushings,it will cause your vibration. That engine came out of (I am guessing here) a 3/4 ton van?? if so,it was a work horse and you should check crank shaft end play as stated earlier in this thread.Good luck.

I dont know what kind of trans mount you have, But if i try to use the prothane (hard plastic looking mount) mine will vibrate so bad you cant see out the rear view. Also these cars are picky about pinion angle, I found if i go over 4 Degrees negative i also pick up vibration. If the car is eating u-joints i would check pinion angle.

There are more than a few things that can cause vibration and seal wear.
If a seal goes out, it is important to check the play between the yoke and the transmission output shaft. If you can see the play then you need a new bushing.
A new seal will hide the vibration because it helps to center the yoke but it won't last long.....
A driveline that is running too much or not enough angle will wobble under a load - they usually will settle back down but not always.
A driveshaft that is too long or too skinny will also cause vibration at higher speeds, If it is bad enough it will bend the driveshaft enough to make it stay a vibrating monster - you can check this with a yellow crayon and the car on stands- just move the crayon slowly closer to the driveline (about mid point between the u-joints) until it just makes contact. If the line doesn't go all the way around then you have a bent shaft.
Sometimes the u-joint yoke can be loose enough that it lets the cap slip under load and then the shaft is out of ballance. It also can mess up the needles in there.
Check to make sure that your differential pinion seal is not leaking. If it is leaking then you probably have a bad pinion bearing. That will cause a "peek-a-boo" vibration too.

I had problems with my car eating rear u-joints a while back. I would get rid of my vibration only for it to be back 3-4 months later. Same thing every time...bad rear joint. I had a different rear end I had been wanting to put it and finally got around to it. No problems since. I discovered the rear end that I taken out of the car had been rocking on the spring perches quite badly. The perches were severely rounded where the leaf spring sits. I should have figured it out a few months earlier when I snapped one of my axle u-bolts. Of course this car gets driven pretty hard too. Sure is nice now...no more vibrations even on the highway. So...might wanna take a good close look at your perches. :)

    75 Tranny Vibration

The car is a box stock 75 200 CI with C-4 and the tranny was JUST rebuilt and new ujoints installed prior to taking it to the tranny shop.
The vibration came in after the tranny rebuild.
I looked at the tranny mount when it was on the lift and it looked fine. If the mount was bad he would have gladly sold me a new one, yo know what I mean.

I am waiting for him to call. There is no rush on the car, it is a play toy for me to give me something to do.

When It comes back I need to put a new heater core in it. I bet that is a fun job with factory A/C.
