I go through PB-Blaster by the case at work!!! great stuff.Definitely works as advertised.Heat helps too.
a lot of times ...with me... if the bolt head is this bad...the bolt breaks... hope this isn't the case with yours....PB BLASTER... ...:Handshake...
Try using a six point metric or undersized SAE socket on them. If that won't work then weld a nut on them by filling the center as you weld them on. After they cool a bit then turn the bolt out using the nut and a socket. This also works with broken bolts.
Ok thanks for all the Advise bought a set of Craftsman bolt extractors last night , uses a 3/8 socket wrench, also will get PB blaster, for the life of me I could not remember what that stuff was called. anyway will buy some on lunch today. will a small propan torch suffice for heating if it comes to that? sorry guys I have no welding knowledge at all.
I don't think the propane torch will work, not enough heat. I have alway's used a acetyline torch and get the bolt, nut, pipe plug, etc. cherry red and then squirt it with a stream of cold water. Works everytime for me. Might be able to try it with the propane torch and be prepared to apply the flame for a long time. Then tap the socket on the head and see if it backs out. Be sure to use good pair of gloves either way.
mapp gas is much better than propane. get it hot then spray with p.b. let it soak then try the tools.
wouldnt you heat the manifold, not the bolt? wouldnt heating the bolt expand it tighter into the manifold?
if possible it is best to run the car and heat both but if all you can do is a small area then heat the bolt and surrounding steel.
start the engine, if possible... let the headers/exhaust manifolds heat up.. and try the craftsman bolt removal tool as mentioned.. they work great, with patience. otherwise, you will need to cut the heads off the bolts, and try that route
I have the bolt removal tools just need time to get out there and try it. I did spary some PB Blaster last night though.
