Funny thing about the track...Whatever you EXPECT to run, you should always add a second or so...seems to never run as good as you expect. I put in a posi 3.80 gear and new tires and actually LOST time (went from 24" tire to 27" and effectively "undid" my 3.80 gears). I was expecting to get traction and be able to nail it and it actually went a couple tenths slower...
Can you hold it in second through the traps? When I had highway gears, my 75 would want third gear about 50 foot from the traps. When I shifted it, I lost et/mph. When I let it stay in second, it would float the valves right when I hit the traps, which I didn't like, but it got the best et/mph that way. Sounds like you have issue with not enough rpm and too much traction on launch, IMO. I had to spin tires through half of first and much of second, or my car would bog. Again, a symptom of 3.00 gears. Any traction would take the engine out of it's powerband. Edit: Have the gears been changed in the car ever? They came stock with 2.79 and 3.00... 3.73 and 2.79 sound alot alike if the gear hasn't been changed and someone miscounted rotations. Otherwise, sounds like you have a 3.80 gear... Which should be a hellva gear if your car is tuned well. Might just come down to the converter...
3.73 sounds more like 3.80...IF the gears HAVE been changed... Put a good mark on the tire and the drive shaft and get a decent estimate on the gearing. You should be able to estimate if it is 2.79, 3.0 (which would be an even line-to-line) or 3.80...
