Hey guys, I have a question for you. will the late 90s explorers have these 302s in them? Reason I ask is because I found out my brother in law's best friends works at a junkyard and when I talked to him he says his place only has a 96 and 97 explorers already parted out.

    Cheers!

    I'm not sure what years they had 302's in them. I have a 2000 and it's a 302.

96 and 97 Will have 302s. that was the transistion period of the P head. So you have to decide which ones you want.

What's the biggest difference between the P heads on the 96/97 Explorers and the GT40 ones?

96 and some early 97's had the gt40's which have 3 hash marks on the front of the heads and a F3ZE number on them, and the P heads have 4 hash marks on the front of the head and a F77E part number on them, the GT40 head will fit on any 289- 302- 351W without any mods, the P head may require some header mods.

also the 5.0 engine was used in explorers from 96 to 2003, also I have a 99 explorer motor in my wifes 65 mustang (injected) and it fits very well, I think they are a little tighter on hood clearance than mavs.

To add To the info listed above. Theres no headers made for the P heads in mavericks. Chirt has them on his car. But he had to buy spark plug wire arms. And last i checked they were really really expensive. Like 35 bucks each.

I recently read somewhere that someone is making a special short spark plug that helps with them but I havent researched it, I have several friends running P heads that use 90 degree boots and say they work, its hard to see how though.

accel makes shortie spark plugs. Theyve been doing it for years. If you do a search you can find scotts thread on those heads. And it has pictures of how the plugs hit the actual headers. I would just save the headache and go with the nonP heads. They flow just fine.

I run the straight GT40 head and they are great, mine are unported with only good springs, the car runs low 12's on tires and gets over 20 mpg and I've only got 400$ in them so I agree with you, I didnt know that about the short plugs I'll have to check that out.
