The H-pipe on an OEM Mustang dual exhaust is halfway between the converters and mufflers. you can eyeball it to 6"-12" behind the trans mount without any negative effects. Either an X or H will knock out the popping of an ubalanced system so it's really preference. Mine is an X and the center assembly is removeable with mufflers attached.
not just beyond the collectors, but farther down the pipe, Joe Dirt is spot on at 10-14" but you're not going to hurt anything going as far a 24". the open spot just behind the trans gives a decent distance for exhaust equalization and plenty of room to mount it. I ran an H and X in this location with great results and even a Y with a 3" outlet. I loved the way it sounded but I really needed 3.5"-4" and the bigger mandrel bends are very expensive.
exhaust drone is tricky to get rid of. most likely by adding an h-pipe will only move the drone up or down versus RPM, which may be exactly what you want by putting it in a non-cruising RPM range. Aaaaaaaaghhhhh!!! I am actually quite good at math, I just hate doing it. I will try to skim those articles this afternoon and get a better idea. Drone is the actual issue, more so than noise and volume. I don't mind those. Hopefully when I start to do the math, I will find that the pulses are somewhere in the less-than-2.5"-apart range so if I get the H-pipe close, it should catch those pulses and cancel them out a bit.
Then calculations and trial and error will be the order of the day. My T5 install took care of my drone. When it happens, I just up or downshift...
Simply brilliant. Now thats a good fix. I read the articles on drone myself and came to the conclusion it was too much messin around with tail pipes and tubes. I'll live with it. Hell if the C4 gives me grief I may just end up 5 speed and fix it that way. Believe it or not I'd rather do that than mess with exhaust pipes.
need a good reference mic and realtime playback system. Flip the phase on that drone and pump it back out. should work... in theory
X or H pipes ?? Just my opinion folks ; Its all about the "flow" of the exhaust .. at an idle, Ithink the H pipe is quieter .. under increased RPMs the exhaust exits the pipes at its path of least resistance .. Exhaust doesn't turn left or right so I'd go with the X pipe or the siamese exhaust as its also referred to since the exhaust would have an unobstructed route to exit . (No turns) As far as the sound .. my siamese exhaust is quiet until I stab it .. then you can hear it well enough . We'e done five cars with the siamese style and have had great results. I could never distinguish the difference if there is any between the H-Pipe or X-pipe . Cometized

My solution: Subwoofers. Well actually on this car I never had any drone. This is the exhaust system I just snatched out of the car: ...and it was always quiet inside the car. Sounded great outside. Unfortunately it's not enough flow for my 351w so I had to pull it. I will miss the sound, but hopefully I'll enjoy the sound of headers, 2-chamber race mufflers and dumps as well.
I have actually THOUGHT of going siamese, if the drone doesn't go away. Pull the two pipes together into a 3" side outlet... I will try the H first. In my mind's eye, I see the bouncing waves in the pipes...some of them will bounce into the hole created by the H-pipe, cancelling out some of the noise/drone. If not, siamese setup.
Place your "H" pipe at the same distance in back of your collectors as your primary header tubes are long. That will make them fairly effective.
