if you don't want a fight with headers...hedman shorties are the way to go :) btw ive ordered thousands and dollars worth of stuff from summit and it has never came scratched or damaged...might want to look into a return and grab the hedman shorties...but if longtubes are a must...you will have fun.

Wrighttime is probably right you not being the first owner of them lol.

Would the hedman shorties clear my z bar?
Are they that much easier to install?
I don't care about the long tubes I just need exhaust.

Well broke down and pulled the motor. I've got the driver side in. I was working on getting the driver side in when the wind kicked up and blew my hood over landing on my calf. Know I'm back in the house for the night with a swollen leg lol.......but at least the driver side header is in.

Both headers are in and bolted up.
For those who would like to know.....
The summit headers will fit and seem to even clear my z bar setup for my toploader.
The only way I could get the driver side in was to pull the whole engine and lift it almost completely out of the engine bay. Once it was in it pretty much stayed right in place and I didn't have any issues bolting it up.
The passenger side would not go in from the top. I tried this with the engine lifted a few inches and with everything that could possibly interfere unbolted. With the engine in the car the tubes will hang on the firewall or heads of the motor. Only way I was able to do it was to jack the front of the car up about 2 foot an go in from the bottom. It went in really easily that way.
Exhaust port 2 tube on the passenger side had to be clearanced. It hits the shock tower. You can bolt the header on if you lift the motor about 2 inches but it will not allow you to lower the motor all the way down. I was able to simply take a large flat head screwdriver and a dead blow and beat the screw driver between the shock tower and that tube and it clearanced it just enough to clear and allow the motor mount to line up.

The only other possible issue that I see is that the header collectors are slightly wider than the stock exhaust hump locations ( maybe 2 inches outside of where the exhaust would be for it to be lined up perfectly ).

When I get some decent weather and time I will be hooking up my z bar and verifying that there are no clearance issues there. At this point it doesn't appear to be an issue. Just going to be a real PITA getting the z bar linkage back in and bolted up.

Sorry to hear that man. They should cut these headers so they fit without all this trouble from the get go. I hope the other side goes well .

I'd run shorties on everything too.. IF they didn't give up so much torque as the trade off.

Whenever I complained about access problems and cut up knuckles.. my uncles just laughed at me saying "what the hell do you think knuckles are for?"

I finally figured it out after several years of mechanic'ing. To get in the way of fingers ability to make money by cutting corners. :biglaugh:

Well all in all it wasn't a terrible experience........yet lol

If summit would have shipped when they were suppose to and if UPS would have delivered when they were suppose to I would had the headers in much more easily as I was planning on putting them in as the motor went in.

Tomorrow I will hit it again early and get the z bar on and functioning and report back with my failure or success. Hopefully I can get the z bar on and the exhaust in place.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles, but hopefully everything else will just fall in place! Again, too bad you are so far away, like I mentioned in one of your other threads about headers/toploader, I went through all this back in the 80's, customized my set for the exact same usage, 302 w/Toploader 4 spd, Lakewood bellhousing, manual steering, factory Z bar etc......., headers even have that same dimple on RH #2!
Anyways, for anyone wanting a set of headers, can check them out on my CL posting........

this was for complete exhaust set up used in my 74 Comet 302, 2 door so anyone else out there not wanting to go through the same hassles.....:)

Got everything in today.wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Got most of the exhaust done and the z bar hooked up and functioning. I still have some adjusting to do on the z bar rod and I need to find a good place for a stiff spring to help with pedal return.
All in all a good day.
