my nightmare was a...new bellhouseing...bored off center. kept taking out the front pumps... bought it so I wouldn't have any problems...it was purty...
First trans I replaced with dad helping(actually doing most of the work) he installed converter on flexplate with tabs at 12 & 6 o'clock, went together with just a couple try's... This was a old cast iron Cruise O Matic with three of us lifting it into place(didn't have a jack)... Didn't take me long to figure out it was easier to seat the converter first and use a jack...
As luck would have it i had another bonehead moment... Got caught up in the excitement and forgot to drill the dang front oil dipatick hole in the 5.0 timing cover.. .doh Engine is already in and about buttoned up. No oil or coolant in it yet.......can i use the stock location with an aftermarket dipstick and tube???? Praying i dont have to pull the engine to get a dipstick in this thing lmao!!!!
Dipstick reads oil in the sump, front sump requires a front dipstick... You're gonna have to pull either the front cover or pan and drill cover... BTW engine looks great...
If you are going to all that trouble, you might as well remove the balancer and remove the whole front cover. Then you can properly drill new hole for oil dip stick, not worry about filings dropping into oil pan, risk damaging the front crank oil seal......there's also a possibiliy that oil pan gasket under the timing cover could get damaged too, depends if any sealer was used, some of those newer style silicone one piece units can be reused, plus since your engine is still brand new, chances are pan gasket should be OK, once timing cover is carefully removed. You probably will need to purchase a new front timing cover gasket. Good luck! David
I think im gonna just lift the engine and slide the pan back. It has a felpro one piece gasket with no sealer so i will definitely reusing it. Was just hoping for a non drilling option.
