okay so for clarification am i supposed to be seeing light around the whole blade or just the half moving up toward the air filter? because i am not seeing it through the whole blade and by the time i do it seems like too much. and .020 feeler seems like an awful lot on the primaries cuz it opened a lot. what am i doing wrong?
That is .020 of the transfer slot exposed....should make it appear square. And yes light all the way around the secondary blades
Stock jetting on the Holley 670 is 65 front and 68 rear. Those carbs are calibrated from the factory for sea-level. I agree that is "sounds" like a lean-stumble. I've never had luck messing with pump cams. The orange one that Holley installed at the factory should be just fine. A bigger pump shooter may be necessary. I also agree with using a vacuum gauge for adjusting air/fuel mixture. I also agree with making sure the ignition timing is set correctly. Your spark plugs should indicate if a jet change is necessary, but it's not likely that the jets are the cause for the stumble you are experiencing. Oh yeah, and definitely check float height.
Get your timing straight 100 percent before you mess with anything else.....timing can essentially richen or lean what your carb is metering. Once you are dead certain you have proper timing set then return your carb to stock for a baseline and tune from there. Make sure to wrote down all the info from your carb.....jet sizes pump cam squirter size power valve.... General carb rules.... Stumble or cut out off idle is lean so go bigger on squirter or cam Bog off idle is rich go the opposite Get a vac gauge on it to tune your idle circuit. Take not of your hg reading at idle. Compare that to your PV and make sure your on point there.....I believe the recommendation is 2-4hg below your idle reading but I've heard cutting in half is also a good idea. Plug readings will indeed verify jetting changes if needed. All of the carbs are jetted and set up to run out of the box at sea level assuming you have the right carb size for your application. However every engine is different..... That will be true for timing and carb tuning.... You will have to do a lot of back and forth to find what truly works the best for your application. When you get it close you will know....and a dyno if its close and in the budget is a sure fire way to get it tuned in..... Or spend a few bucks on a air fuel gauge.
okay i will thanks. so i set my initial to 18 but when i plug the hose into the vac. pot (at full vac.) it goes off the charts, the arrow/ needle you use to check timing with the light is off the charts, no numbers at all.
Put an Allen screw in the pot where the hose attaches and turn it a couple of good turns ccw that will reduce your vac advance. If u want turn it all the way in and then slowly bring it out and drive it to feel what it likes.....too much can cause a really on off low rpm cruise.
okay so haven't had much time to work on this, i came across something and i think i have a bigger problem. may have a bad head gasket. foaming in oil, pretty high coolant pressures, odd amounts of water coming out exhaust at startup, might be causing my performance lacks and idle problems as well. gotta get a coolant leak test and/or compression test to see for sure
If you have milky / foamy oil you more then likely have a head gasket issue. Compression check the cylinders and especially look for a drop in cylinder pressure on two cylinders in pairs. Chances are if you know you have foamy oil and high coolant pressures you have a head gasket issue. Luckily doing a set of head gaskets is a pretty straight forward job on a 302 so you should be able to do it in a day and have it back up and running. With the car on and running pull the coolant cap ( WHEN THE CAR IS STILL COLD ) and look and listen for bubbles and escaping gas from the coolant system. Should be real noticeable.
yeah i have done head gaskets on 302s many times. this once specifically i have done 3 times due to me swapping heads so much. i have the weekend off thats a great time for me to do them
Sounds good. What heads do you have on it now? If u havent posted your setup post it here so we can get an overview of what your working with. bore? Carb? Headers? Trans? Gears? Intake? Cam?
okay here we go. 302 HO with a rolling thunder cam, e7 heads, weiland dual plane intake, holley 670 street avenger, long tube headers, t5 transmission, factory gearing, straight pipes no mufflers, stock dist., and i thnk thats it
Sounds like a solid setup. I've got a roller motor on the stand rightbnow waiting for parts. I've got a mid 80s 302 block that falls in the 50oz imbalance but not a roller motor era. I've got all the luck.
