I let this thread run on to see if anyone would suggest the best way to route the tube for mech. gauges. The best way I have found is to run the tube (or braided hose) from the sender to the frame/firewall/inner fender, then run copper from there back to the gauge. You can also use hard line as it "hides" a little better. That way there is no flexing of the hard line (which causes cracks). The only flexible piece will be from the sender to the hardline, which should be kept as short as possible. That said, I still have a plastic line on mine but I check it religiously. Might re-do that line very soon though!
That's because electrical gauges on new cars are cheaper than mechanical units for the manufacturer. With an electrical gauge you are at the mercy of the sending unit. Better hope it is calibrated correctly and built well.
You can say the same about mechanical gauges. I've seen a Stewert Warner mechanical pressure gauge that has a rated accuracy of only +/- 14%! Pretty crappy.
