My '73 has the Halo. I think it looks pretty nice. I'm not really a fan of vinyl tops, but I think it sets the car off. It's also less area for me to wax!! My '72 has the full vinyl top and I hate the way that looks, especially the color, but the top is perfect so I really don't want to mess with it. There are enough things that need work on that car, so I think I'll leave what's not broken alone. It's funny you mention texturizing. When I had the bedliner sprayed in my truck I thought it looked just like vinyl top material. I may spray bedliner for my halo top if I ever need to replace it in the future. I don't think I'd put a vinyl top on a car that didn't originally come with one, though. Just my
I much prefer the full vinyl top to the halo, if a car is going to have a vinyl top at all. I dunno, in the end you gotta do what makes you happy. I was well aware that there are people who don't like yellow cars and there are the people who hate vinyl tops, but ultimately I had a vision of what I wanted, so I went with both because it made me happy(and a new top was a great way to hide the pitting that was under the original vinyl top ). No matter what you do there will be people who like it, people who think it sucks, and people who have opinions that fall somewhere inbetween...just make sure you like the way it looks.
I take it "halo" means the 3/4 vinyl top? I have that on my 75. I really did like the look of it, but after 30 years on the car it rotted my roof clean through. No other rust on the car to speak of, but roof 'no more'. Again, it looks alot sportier than a full vinyl roof, I like it, but I wouldn't have another true vinyl top. I would rather paint the roof the color of the original top and put the trim back. No texture though, that would look kinda goofy IMO. I also would not use a gloss black for a black top. I would use the semi-gloss that Ford used so much of on trim during the late 60s into the 70s. It would give the feel of vinyl without having to texture it. It is something I still might do when I am further along with my restomod. I like how it makes the car look shorter and sleeker... my yellow car anyway. Dave
ok so my car has the halo top trim but no vinal top. it is painted white. i don't think my car came with the vinal but it did come with the halo. i think it looks good. did our cars come with a painted halo top or did some one do this to get rid of the vinal on my car? my car is all yellow with a white top.
No the 3/4 and halo tops are different. the 3/4 goes from in front of the C pillars ( about 8" in front of the rear window) all the way down the A-pillars. The halo top does not go down the a-pillars, as you can see in the pics of George's car (grabber351). I think the 3/4 vinyl top is the best looking of the vinyl tops, but no vinyl top is the best looking of all!
Halo top The halo top is a really cool feature because it makes the car more interesting without messing with the lines of the roof. I think Mavericks need the vinyl top to look like more than an average old economy car. I dont know if I would go to the trouble of figuring out a way to make the chrome stay put if the car didnt have it originally though. That may be a real challenge.
I like big (bumpers) and I can not lie....those other fellows can deny......when a little itty bitty bumper..... O.K. I'll stop now.
As far as Halo tops go. If you HAVE to go with a top, I think the Halo or 3/4 looks the best. But, I've seen all kinds of opinions on this thread!
OK, my , 4 door car, go for it. 2 door car, lose it. Vinyl looks better on the sedan body styles, paint looks better on fastbacks and slopeing pillars. Just get some wrinkle valve cover paint to have texture, in the rattle can, of course! JMO, your car, do what makes you happy.
I like anything that makes the car look period. Vinyl tops definiyely do that. Here is my original landau top.
I think the halo would look great...but I would have to agree with some others that I would paint it with no texture with color contrasted with the black I feel it would work well
