Plus neither of those two have an AOD.

Oh, wait a minute. The 1950 two door Ford does have the three speed maual with an automatic overdrive.:rofl2:

Sorry I am coming in late to this thread...I have been wanting to do an AOD-E swap this winter and had no idea that the factory floor shifter can't be modified in some way to shift the AOD. I really don't want to go aftermarket for the shifter...
Is it possible to flip the lever on the AOD 180 degrees (like has to be done to a column shift C-4 to allow for a floor shift)? It sounds like it still would not be a straight shot, but at least the lever would be going the right direction.

Also, where did you get the block plate from to allow the AOD to mount to the 302? Someone may *give* me an AOD-E from a 1995 Crown Vic and I have wondered how I might go about getting it to connect to my '77 302. I am making a big assumption that the AOD and AOD-E have the same bell housing, of course...

Yea your right. I guess I need to grow up and not let people know that they have OTHER model vehicles that are cool:rolleyes:
Sorry to have taken you off topic Ryan. :Handshake Sounds like goldie has your answers though.

i dropped my mav. off at the transmittion shop today(AOD swap). the guy said all will work on my early motor except the flexplate (needs to be 164 tooth 28 oz). he will custom make a cross member.
he said the floor shifter will work fine....2 will be drive and (D) will be overdrive (y) .
i don't think you can flip an AODE shift lever
i will get pics. as he goes in with it...frank...:bouncy:

Block plate definitely needs to be swapped. ( I got mine form a 90s mustang) The larger diameter flywheel requires a different starter and it mounts farther out in the bell housing. Great time to upgrade to the mini starter as it matches the 164 tooth flywheel perfect.

Stock shifting overdrives are a pain in the but to race. You can start in first, then shift to second then the car will automatically shift to third with the shifter still in second over a certain rpm. To hold second longer you have to shift from one to two then after the tranny shifts move the lever back to one and hold it there until you want to shift to three and then move it back up to the 2 position. This is why I went full manual. Driving my AOD Mustangs was fun but passengers thought I was crazy going back to first gear.

There may be a way of using the stock shifter but I see too many turnbuckles, bent rods and pivot points for it to be feasible.

    Universal crossmember!

One crossmember recommendation semi close (but still needed mods) was the 67-70 Mustang AOD aftermarket units (Ron Morrison) for example for $139 or so.
Now DVS Restorations has a universal adjustable unit for $129 that will fit many rigs/applications and probably will work with our rigs too.
    Woo-hoo!!
