you can buy a cheap ammeter (dash mounted style) and hook the fan up with a jumper wire to see the initial spike and constant draw. It's not as accurate as the inductive type used with a DVOM, but it will get you in the ball park. I know many people are using fuses, but on fans, I prefer cycling circuit breakers of the calculated rating you need.
I found when I tested my Taurus fan the difference in system voltage between just the battery and having the alternator running made a difference of about 5 amps.
