Well looks like this thread has turned into a pissing match. I bet it'll be locked pretty soon!

Back to the original post, yeah you can build your own turbocharged 200. It doesn't look hard, but it won't be easy either. A good turbocharger would be a Air Research turbo from a turbocoupe or a Mustang SVO. Be aware that some of the TCs came with an IHI turbo...which is TINY. The Air Research (now Garrett) should be capable of flowing enough air to support 300 HP give or take. Maybe a little more with a GOOD intercooler. You can find these things in junkyards all the time. Best bet is to get one from a car that had a 5 speed as they have a little larger turbine housing. The rest is just fabrication and figuring out some type of fuel system.

I would do a T3 or IHI (still should be about 200 HP) with a blow through carb and no IC. Just keep the boost down below 10 psi and it'll be fine. Should be pretty cheap and easy. It's a good place to start too. Later you can put on an IC, then go to a bigger T3/T4 hybrid if you want and so on and so forth.

For the turbo t-birds the 4 eye cars have the bigger T3s and the aero nose ('87-'88) have the IHI. The IHI performs very well for the 200-225 HP range. It comes on real quick. It was actually intended to be a tweener because the super bird wasn't ready yet.

Either way with the 200 and the log style intake/head system is still not going to be very efficient even with a turbo. If its futher down the road and you want to build the six then check into the new aluminum head there building for the Ford Six. You would probably gain more with just that head than putting the turbo on the 200.
I dont know what you mean about rice burner style with the turbo?..since turbo's are turbo's regardless of what they are on. I've never seen a riced out turbo.

That's where a high pressure turbo like the IHI or T3 would work out pretty well. They'll overcome a lot of poor flow characteristics of the old I6 head.

I agree though, a cross flow head would be a great place to start for a performance build up.

Maybe he's talking about really obnoxiously loud blow off valves and angry bee mufflers.

Well, what I was referring to was the fact that I have a smaller engine, and putting a turbo on it would be rice-ish in the fact that I might as well just get a bigger engine. I just want to keep the original engine, so with a turbo, I can still get a HP boost AND keep the original engine. I just get angry when kids try to look cool in their Hondas and Nissans that are "quick" and sound like weed whacker's. Everyone talks about how any rice burner would "blow out" say a camaro or a mustang. If you put the same components that give them their speed (i.e. turbo, nitro) onto a camaro or... a Maverick =), those cars would DOMINATE ricers, and they'd sound better doing it, too. I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm just stating an opinion, which in my eyes, are facts...

I don't see a turbo on a smaller engine being ricer-ish at all. Ford was doing it from the factory in the 80's.

haha one of my friends(doesnt know how much i know about cars, and he still thinks i'm working on a mustang) said he was going to get a H3 and put a V-tec in there...and i said "why? the most you'll get is 200HP and the stock one has more than that"....and he said "but i'm get a custom built one":rofl2:

What if you were to find a donor engine from a T-Bird Turbo Coupe or SVO Stang?

That stuff might be easy to convert to the small 6.
If I were looking to do this, that might be an angle I study hard.

IMO, the fact that the I6s have heads that are hard to work with makes the whole turbo thing attractive. The fact is that good heads are not a bad thing with forced induction, but they are not a must. For N/A engines, there is no way around sucky heads. For a forced engine, it will force no matter what. Air flow stats don't mean much.

    Well....Dave, you're partly right.

The stock head will work OK. It just won't make the power that it COULD if it was easily "worked". You can overcome the low flow numbers by increasing the density of the air going through the port, but, downside to increasing the density (more boost) is heat. The more you compress air, the hotter it gets. It is entirely possible to run a lot of boost and make good power, but the tune had better be good. Detonation=ka-bang. You could easily have 300 HP on a stock head at, say, 18 psi....but if it had a good head, you might be able to have the same HP at only 9 psi. Entirely possible, and it has been proven over the years.

The 2.3's had crappy heads (we all know that). The turbo heads were different (still sucked but they weren't as bad as the N/A and dual plug head). In one of those little mid 80's turbo 2.3's it is quite possible to make 350+ HP on the stock ported head, but at 25 psi and higher. Put an esslinger head on there with a good camshaft and you can still do 350 HP...but with around 15-18 psi depending on the combo. On these little beasts, I just cranked the boost up a little at a time....finally maxed out the T3...and went with a Holset HE351CW turbocharger....they LOVE higher boost (they run 35+ PSI on the Cummins engines).

It's possible to make good power even with the stock head, as long as the intercooler is efficient enough to drop the charge temps. My discharge temps on the 20 PSI 2.3 were around 115 degrees at the most. FActory interHEATER temps (stock engine) were around 175 degrees. Even though boost pressure didn't change, the power sure did.

200 six + GOOD intercooler + alky injection=LOTS of fun!
