backspacing suggestions for '72 Comet V-8 rear wheels

can anyone suggest what wheel backspacing is maximum for a '72 Comet. I have been told that 4 3/4" is max. Obviously that eliminates any late model Mustang factory wheels. What size slicks do you guys with all the fast Mavs/Comets run?
