Blocking off the heat passage is more for a racing situation. Unless in live in lower Az. Oil in the intake is probably from your PCV sucking up there. You need some type of baffle in the valve cover to avoid this. Have you checked the timing of your carb's accelerator pump? It should start squirting has soon as you move the pedal. If not the cam on the accelerator pump needs some more tuning.
