Blocking off the heat passage is more for a racing situation. Unless in live in lower Az.
Oil in the intake is probably from your PCV sucking up there. You need some type of baffle in the valve cover to avoid this. Have you checked the timing of your carb's accelerator pump? It should start squirting has soon as you move the pedal. If not the cam on the accelerator pump needs some more tuning.

To add to Ricks thoughts, double check the following, dist advance hose is hooked up to the port that has no vaccum on it at idle (port above throttle plates), make sure the fuel level is at the bowl plug height, no water in the fuel, throttle plate to transition slot relationship is correct if not it requires air correction holes in the throttle plates. There is a procedure to do this. The problem is there somewhere. Keep at it. Its a learning process.
