Have someone set in the driver's seat, engine off, and push the gas pedal to the floor, then see where your primary butterflies are at. With vaccuum sec. On a 302, even a moditified one, you're probably not even starting to open the secondaries. Just not enough air flow. Only way to really find out is go to the weakest sec spring, install it and drive it. Remember thou even the 289 HiPo only came with a 480 Holley and that did very well, 390 GTs had a 600 Holley and that was prefect for it. im not convinced that my existing maverick throttle cable allows for my 4 barrell's secondaries to open.
how do i test to see if it is?
with the car not running... ive manually pulled the throttle cable back, all the way. the secondary butterflies never open.
however, that may be because they are vacuum secondaries.
the caruretor is an edelbrock, and i installed the edelbrock throttle relocation kit.
seems like the car was considerably "badder" before i installed the relocation kit, and new throttle cable.
also...
if i do buy a certain 67 mustang...
could i transfer the old "bell-crank" throttle assembley over to the maverick? (replace the throttle cable)
